Franklin fire crews battled a fire at a pellet plant early Wednesday morning.
Capt. John Friis with the Franklin Volunteer Fire Department told WAVY.com the call came in just before 3 a.m. for a fire at the Enviva Pellets plant in Southampton County.
Friis said there was a fire in a silo holding the wood pellets. It took about an hour and a half to get the fire under control and no injuries were reported.
Four fire departments responded to the blaze including three from Southampton County. Enviva's website did not provide an address of the plant.
Enviva released the following statement:
This morning, around 2:30 AM, there was a fire in the pellet processing system at Enviva Pellets Southampton facility. Enviva operators took immediate and appropriate action and called the local Fire Department. We are grateful for the rapid and professional response of fire departments from Franklin, Courtland Newsome and Hunterdale. Most importantly no one was hurt as a result of this event. We are currently assessing root cause and damage, but do not expect major downtime or loss. Any apparent smoke from the plant is process steam and not fire related.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
