2018 03 18 152605Globalstar Europe Satellite Services Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of Globalstar Inc. and the leader in satellite messaging and emergency notification technologies, announces that Orsa Besparingsskog, a company which manages a range of forestry, commercial and recreational activities in the vast woodlands of Sweden’s Orsa region, has selected SPOT Gen3® to improve safety for forest-based workers and hydro-electricity personnel.

Orsa Besparingsskog is responsible for managing approximately 75,000 hectares of woodland owned by a consortium of local owner-partners. This includes overseeing 60,000 hectares of woodland, harvesting and selling timber and maintaining Orsa’s extensive road network. Also, an important part of the business is Tallheds Plantskola, a large nursery where trees and plants are grown to ensure the long-term sustainability and welfare of Orsa’s forests.

  • Swedish regional forest management company, Orsa Besparingsskog, has selected SPOT Gen3® devices to safeguard forest rangers, timber workers and hydro-electricity staff
  • Orsa Besparingsskog chose SPOT Gen3 for its satellite reach, help and SMS functionality, providing a safety lifeline to staff working beyond the reach of GSM cellular
  • Pocket-sized, rugged and affordable SPOT messengers have been used in over 5,500 rescues worldwide to date

The company also owns eight small hydroelectric power plants located in neighbouring Gävleborgs County, delivering approximately 28 GWh to the Swedish electricity grid.

Fredrik Eriksson, Senior Ranger with Orsa Besparingsskog, explains: “We were anxious to provide a means of communication and safety for our staff who spend long periods of time in remote areas with no reliable GSM signal.”

Orsa Besparingsskog considered using alternative solutions and technologies, but SPOT Gen3 was chosen for its superior, reliable reach. Additionally, SPOT’s help button and SMS message capability were deemed as unique and compelling, and were persuasive factors in the procurement decision. “The help function is especially useful in cases where there has been a vehicle breakdown or puncture in the forest,” says Eriksson. “Now, with our SPOT devices, our teams feel safer and connected,” he added.

If a forest ranger or electricity worker encounters an emergency, a simple press of SPOT’s SOS instantly sends an alert and the user’s GPS co-ordinates to the GEOS International Emergency Response Coordination Centre (IERCC). Details of the emergency are immediately transmitted to local first responders and help is rapidly dispatched to the precise location it is needed.

Robert Clarke, Globalstar EMEA Sales Manager, commented: “Year on year, we are seeing an increasing uptake of SPOT to enhance the safety of remote and at-risk workers who carry out their operations in locations where alternative communications options are limited or non-existent.”

“We are delighted to support the team at Orsa Besparingsskog as they manage Orsa’s forests, enabling landowners to maximise the value of their assets, and helping to ensure the region remains a great place to enjoy recreation and do business,” Clarke added.

SPOT Gen3 delivers a range of functionalities which can be programmed to meet the user’s specific needs. Its tracking feature allows first responders and colleagues to locate staff even if they are unable to press the emergency button following an incident. SPOT Gen3 can be pre-configured to send location data to a central operations co-ordinator every 2.5, 5, 10, 30 or 60 minutes.

Globalstar’s family of SPOT GPS satellite messengers have initiated more than 5,500 rescues worldwide since its initial 2007 launch.

Globalstar Europe Satellite Services Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of Globalstar Inc. and the leader in satellite messaging and emergency notification technologies, has just announced that France’s Société Forestière has chosen SPOT Gen3 to protect forest management workers. In an emergency, workers can press a single SOS button to request help and share their precise GPS location.

By the end of 2017, 100 SPOT Gen3 devices will be deployed nationally, supporting forest based operations in six regions: Auxerre, Bordeaux, Bourges, Dijon, Le Mans and Reims. Additional SPOT Gen3’s may subsequently be rolled out.

Highlights:

  • France’s Société Forestière has selected SPOT Gen3® to safeguard lone and remote forest management workers
  • Satellite-enabled SPOT Gen3 emerged the clear choice after tests of GSM based systems failed due to inadequate reach and poor battery life
  • Pocket-sized, rugged and affordable SPOT messengers have been used in over 5,400 rescues worldwide to date

2017 11 02 104501Société Forestière conducted trials of GSM-based alternatives, including iPhone apps, but these were deemed insufficient due to inadequate reach in the remote areas where forest-based operations take place, and also due to poor battery life. Other solutions proposed by France’s mobile network companies failed to function in locations where signal was weak.

French legislation obliges commercial and non-commercial organisations to provide the best possible security to safeguard lone and remote workers.

Société Forestière was able to see the hugely positive results from the UK Forestry Commission’s deployment of more than 700 SPOT Gen3 devices to improve the safety of staff working in areas with unreliable mobile phone and radio communications.

In an emergency situation, Société Forestière workers can press SPOT’s SOS button to alert emergency services via the GEOS International Emergency Response Coordination Centre (IERCC). SPOT Gen3’s tracking feature allows first responders and colleagues to locate forestry staff even if they are unable to press the emergency button following an incident. SPOT Gen3 can be pre-configured to send location data to a central operations co-ordinator every 2.5, 5, 10, 30 or 60 minutes.

“We knew we needed a solution that was independent of GSM mobile networks and other terrestrial alternatives,” said Alain Guillon, Information Systems and IT Security Officer at Société Forestière. “After testing SPOT, we were confident to recommend the SPOT system to the Health and Safety Committee as the best way to protect workers, and to uphold our staff welfare obligations.”

Gary King, Globalstar EMEA Sales Manager for SPOT, commented: “Société Forestière oversees a wide range of forest-based activity, with its prime goals to ensure better forest management and to protect the forest-based investments of its clients. SPOT is now playing a vital role in safeguarding lone workers as they carry out their important duties to manage and preserve France’s forests and forest-based businesses.”

Since its initial launch in 2007, Globalstar’s family of SPOT GPS satellite messengers have initiated more than 5,400 rescues worldwide. SPOT Gen3 was launched in EMEA in November 2013. An accompanying SPOT App allows users to view their SPOT messages, show their track points and monitor their assets via their iOS and Android smartphone or tablet.

Forestry Commission Improves Forest Ranger Safety with Approx. 550 Globalstar SPOT Gen3 Satellite Messengers

Globalstar Europe Satellite Services Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of Globalstar Inc. (NYSE MKT: GSAT) and the leader in satellite messaging and emergency notification technologies and Global Telesat Communications (GTC), a leading value added reseller of Mobile Satellite Solutions (MSS) and a subsidiary of Orbital Tracking Corp. (OTCQB: TRKK), has just announced that the Forestry Commission in England and Scotland is deploying Globalstar’s SPOT Gen3TM messengers under a new sales and support contract with GTC. With the deployment of the new SPOT Gen3 devices, the Forestry Commission is improving the safety of its staff when working in areas with unreliable mobile phone and radio communications.

In an emergency situation, lone workers can press a single button on the SPOT Gen3 to alert emergency services via the GEOS International Emergency Response Coordination Centre (IERCC). The SPOT Gen3 uses Globalstar’s advanced satellite network for communications, even in remote regions. The SPOT Gen3’s tracking feature can also help locate forestry staff if there is an incident and they are unable to press the emergency button. The SPOT Gen3 can be pre-configured to send location data to a central co-ordinator every 2.5, 5, 10, 30 or 60 minutes providing the device is moving.

gen3 productThe Forestry Commission chose the SPOT Gen3 because of its small size and ease-of-use as well as its long battery life and affordability. The Forestry Commission has already deployed the first 200 units nationwide with the intention of deploying approximately 550 SPOT Gen3s over the next 12 months.

“In an emergency situation, particularly if a person is in danger of going into shock, having a device that is quick and easy to use is paramount. We wanted something small enough to fit in a pocket, yet able to provide a lifeline in critical situations,” said a spokesperson for the Forestry Commission. “Many members of our team work in the most remote parts of the UK which are unreachable by radio and mobile phones. With the SPOT Gen3, they have a satellite-based device that brings peace of mind.”

Global Telesat Communications’ Managing Director, David Phipps, commented: “The Forestry Commission is taking advantage of the latest developments in satellite technology to ensure its staff can be found and rescued in an emergency. Furthermore, with this reliable and flexible new technology, the Forestry Commission now has the ability to easily integrate satellite location data with an array of sophisticated third party applications enabling them to not only protect employees, but to more effectively manage their land and support their mission.”
